Whale Watching Point Reyes/ Presidio Yacht club Cruise

February 15/16/17^th 2008

• Whale watching involves a lot of watching (good for navigation practice)
• So get into your boats where the water level views of our historic slice of the California coast are particularly photogenic (you may disagree on days when the fog is especially thick, but each to his/her own!), and we hope the whales will appear on cue like the bluffs and the bridge overhead.  
• Gray Whales travel in groups of 1 to 5
  Gray Whales blow 5 to 14 feet in V shaped blows
  Gray Whales are not migrating as far north or as far south as they used to
  This is because they are finding nutrient waters on the coast of California and Oregon
  For this reason, Gray Whales are sometimes "resident" to certain areas
  Gray Whales raise their flukes or tails before diving

We plan to leave early on Saturday morning from the Presidio Yacht side of the Golden Gate (some of you may want to go up Friday night and moor at the club)to catch the ebb current and head out to the general area of Point Reyes. (That's West I think) Migrating whales keep close to shore to protect themselves from the pods of killer whales which prey on them as they head south. Depending on the weather and the sea state we can hove to and hopefully spot the whales. Once we have had enough of whale watching, eating lunch, photographing and a few beers, we intend to pick up the flood current and head back to the Presidio Yacht Club, They are very keen to have the Fleet 9ers at their club and will accommodate our needs. They will hold some docks for us and there is ample anchoring room to raft up.

Prior to dinner we can join each other for cocktails and share stories of the day and photographs

Sunday will be a take it easy day maybe a little exploring of the area and a nice sail back to our home clubs.

All are encouraged to use good judgment when making the final decision to head out on the water.

As usual all depends on the weather but I have a good feeling that this weekend is going to be great. The tides and currents are aligned with our plans.

We need to let Presidio yacht Club know the numbers attending  by Tuesday Feb 12th  and number of yachts

So NO EXECUSES THIS IS GOING TO BE COOL BRING THE KIDS AND FRIENDS and
