Information About Some of These Links
Catalina Sites
Catalina Yachts
is the builder's site. It's well done and has a lot of
information about the boats they build.
Catalina 36 National Association is loaded with information about C36s of all ages. Wandering around this site is well worth the time.
Weather & Other
Conditions
Sites devoted to weather and weather
forecasting are indicated by a W. All are useful. Weather Underground is both well done and a little less frantic with
the ads. It has a good precipitation radar page, which you can go to
directly from our Satellites and Bay
Cameras links. Click on Play Animated Loop (may take some time
to load) to see which way the rain is
moving.
Weather Charts brings up various weather charts. When you click on this link you will first see some brief suggestions for using the link.
Marine Weather Forecasts is the printed version of the NOAA weather forecasts.
The content at sites with a C varies.
At Ocean Buoys you can read the latest wave, wind, etc., data coming in from a Coast Guard ocean buoy. Click on the blue square next to the buoy number.
Satellites and Bay Cameras brings up a list of sites. The first shows a recent satellite view of the cloud cover over our region, the second, rain; the others are cameras. The Wax Museum (at Fisherman's Wharf) page is particularly useful since it has many of the other cameras that look out over San Francisco Bay.
SF Bay Real-Time Wind Patterns shows wind direction and speed over the Bay. The image is computer generated and based on readings from weather stations around the Bay. If your browser is Java enabled, go the bottom of the screen and click on Streaklines for a dynamic view of the wind. If Java is not enabled you'll just get a gray square.
The Coast Guard Local Notices to Mariners should be looked at every month, particularly if you're planning to cruise in areas you do not know well. Here's where you find out about buoy changes, including those that are not working or that are missing, and a lot more.
Sailing Magazines
All of these are well done, and many have links to the Web sites of almost every source of marine stuff. However, their online magazine articles may only be teasers.
Sail and Latitude38 are particularly useful.
Most of Practical Sailor's test results and reviews are teasers--you have to subscribe to read the full text.
Boating Sites
All of these are useful in one way or another.
Sailnet.com has something on just about everything to do with sailing, including useful online articles. It's also a source for sailing equipment.
SF Bay Sailing and Cruising has a large number of useful links, though some are dead.
Coast Guard Info and Regulations has information about boating. If you want to know about regulations, they are all here. The site is easy to use.
Online Shopping
Defender Marine tends to have the lowest prices. There's no state tax for
California orders, but
there are shipping charges.
Garhauer Marine is the company that makes most of the sailing hardware on Catalinas. Their prices are usually lower than equivalent hardware from other sources.
Interesting
Towboat is an amazing sequence of pictures.
You may have heard about the Green Flash. Here's where you can learn about what it is, how to see it, and there are plenty of pictures.
When the Panama Canal site comes up click of English, or Espaņol. Click on Life Camera to see what's happening at one of the canal locks right now. Click on General Information and then on Who it Works for an animated explanations on how the canal system operates.
Mark Rosenstein's Sailing Page has links from almost everywhere to almost everything about sailing.
